9 Days
Tour Details

The Khopra Danda Trek, also known as the Khopra Ridge Trek, is a lesser-known yet spectacular trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek offers panoramic views of the Himalayan giants, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machapuchare (Fishtail), while taking trekkers through remote villages, terraced farmlands, and dense rhododendron forests. With a moderate level of difficulty, the trek is suitable for those with decent fitness levels and typically takes 7-10 days, depending on the route. The highest point of the trek, Khopra Ridge (3,660 meters), provides breathtaking vistas with far fewer crowds compared to the more popular routes like Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill.

One of the unique aspects of this trek is its focus on community-based tourism. The Khopra Community Lodge, run by locals, allows trekkers to directly support the local economy, contributing to schools and health services in the area. Along the trail, trekkers pass through charming villages like Swanta, where they can engage with the local Gurung and Magar communities and experience traditional Nepali culture firsthand. For those looking for an added adventure, an optional day hike from Khopra Ridge leads to the sacred Khayer Lake (4,600 meters), which holds spiritual significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. This challenging hike offers even more striking mountain views.

The trek can also be combined with a visit to Poon Hill, one of Nepal’s most famous viewpoints, known for its stunning sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The trail is also rich in biodiversity, especially in the spring when the rhododendron forests are in full bloom. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter various species of birds, langurs, and Himalayan pheasants along the way. Overall, the Khopra Danda Trek is an ideal choice for trekkers seeking solitude, cultural immersion, and unparalleled mountain views in a more peaceful setting.

Itinerary

Day 1 Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara 820 meter (6-7 hours)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The 200 km journey takes you through Nepal’s beautiful countryside, passing lush green hills, rivers, and terraced farmlands. You’ll get glimpses of local village life along the way. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you can relax by Phewa Lake and enjoy the stunning backdrop of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Pokhara, known as the “Gateway to the Himalayas,” is a peaceful city full of vibrant cafés and beautiful vistas.

Day 2Drive to Ghandruk and trek to Tadapani (2,600meter/8,528ft) – 4 to 5 hours

After an early breakfast, you’ll drive from Pokhara to Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung village nestled at 1,940 meters, offering a majestic view of the Annapurna Massif. From here, the trek begins with a steady uphill climb through lush rhododendron forests. As you make your way to Tadapani, you’ll pass through tranquil landscapes rich in flora and fauna. The trail offers incredible views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain). Tadapani, meaning “far water,” is a small settlement known for its stunning sunrise views.

Day 3 Trek to Dobato (3,350meter/10,990ft) – 4 to 5 hours

Your day starts with a gentle ascent through dense forests filled with towering oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. The trail is peaceful, offering chances to spot local wildlife, including birds like pheasants and occasional langur monkeys. As you gain altitude, the path opens up to magnificent panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Dobato is a small settlement perched at a high altitude, surrounded by forests, and offers excellent sunset views over the mountains.

Day 4Trek to Khopra Ridge (3,660meter/12,006ft) – 6 to 7 hours

Today’s trek leads you towards Khopra Ridge, a vantage point that offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region. The trail gradually ascends as you leave the tree line behind and enter high-altitude pastures where yaks and sheep graze. Upon reaching Khopra Ridge, the views of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and other surrounding peaks are simply awe-inspiring. Khopra Danda is a less-frequented, peaceful destination, and you’ll stay in a community lodge overlooking a stunning Himalayan panorama.

Day 5 Hike to Khayer Lake (4,500meter/14,762ft) and return to Khopra Ridge – 8 to 10 hours (11 km)

This is the longest and most strenuous day of the trek, as you make your way up to the sacred Khayer Lake, located at 4,500 meters. The trail passes through high-altitude meadows, rocky paths, and isolated landscapes, with incredible close-up views of Annapurna South and Fang. Khayer Lake is a spiritual site for both Hindus and Buddhists, and it offers a sense of serenity at the foot of towering peaks. After spending some time at the lake, you’ll retrace your steps back to Khopra Ridge for the night.

Day 6Trek to Swanta Village (2,214meter/7,263ft) – 5 to 6 hours

Leaving the high mountains behind, you descend to Swanta Village through terraced fields and forests. The trail is a pleasant mix of downhill walks and level paths. Swanta is a traditional village where you’ll get to experience local life and the culture of the Magar people. The village is surrounded by beautiful rice terraces, and from here, you can still enjoy distant views of Dhaulagiri and the surrounding mountains.

Day 7 Trek to Ghorepani (2,858meter/9,376ft) – 4 -5 hours

Today’s trek takes you to the popular trekking hub of Ghorepani. As you descend and then ascend through rhododendron forests, the trail offers a picturesque journey with mountain views. Ghorepani is a bustling village where trekkers from various routes converge. It’s famous for its proximity to Poon Hill, a prime spot for sunrise views over the Himalayas. At this altitude, the weather can be chilly, but the guesthouses here provide a cozy atmosphere.

Day 8 Hike to Poon Hill for sunrise, descend to Hile, and drive to Pokhara – 4 to 5 hours (10.5 km trek and 2 to 3 hours drive)

Wake up early for a pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill (3,210m/10,531ft). The 45-minute ascent is rewarded by one of the most famous sunrise views in Nepal. From the summit, you’ll witness the first rays of sunlight illuminating the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in golden light—a truly magical moment. After descending back to Ghorepani, you’ll continue downhill to Hile, passing charming villages and farmlands. At Hile, a vehicle will pick you up for the drive back to Pokhara, where you can relax after the trek.

Day 9 Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu (6-7 hours)

After a restful night in Pokhara, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu. The journey retraces the scenic route through valleys, rivers, and terraced hills, allowing you to reflect on your trekking adventure. You’ll arrive back in Kathmandu in the afternoon, where you can explore the city or simply relax.
