The Three Pass Trek via Everest Base Camp is a demanding and exhilarating journey through the Everest region of Nepal, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and high-altitude challenges. Starting with a visit to Everest Base Camp, trekkers are treated to close-up views of the world’s highest peak and the vibrant atmosphere of the base camp. The trek involves crossing three high passes: Kongma La (5,535 m), the highest pass offering views of Makalu and the Lhotse-Nuptse wall; Cho La (5,420 m), which connects the Gokyo Valley to Everest and provides impressive vistas of Everest; and Renjo La (5,388 m), known for its panoramic views of Everest, Makalu, and the Rolwaling Range. Along the way, trekkers visit the stunning turquoise Gokyo Lakes and enjoy stunning mountain vistas from Gokyo Ri (5,357 m). The trek also includes cultural experiences in traditional Sherpa villages and passes through iconic sites such as Tengboche Monastery and Kala Patthar. The route involves significant altitude gains and requires careful acclimatization, physical fitness, and appropriate gear. The adventure culminates with a return to Kathmandu, having traversed some of the most spectacular terrain in the Himalayas.
Kathmandu
You’ll start with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a thrilling journey that offers stunning views of the Himalayas. After landing, you’ll begin your trek to Phakding, a charming village nestled by the Dudh Koshi River. The trail is relatively gentle and gives you a chance to acclimatize to the altitude while enjoying the serene landscape of pine forests and small settlements.
Today’s trek will take you from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest region. The path climbs steadily, passing through lush forests and crossing several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. The ascent to Namche Bazaar, situated at 3440 meters, is challenging but rewarding. Once you reach this bustling Sherpa town, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant markets and local culture.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, you’ll spend the day in Namche Bazaar. You’ll embark on a hike to Hotel Everest View, located at 3900 meters. This hike is designed to boost your acclimatization while offering spectacular views of Everest and the surrounding peaks. You’ll return to Namche Bazaar for the night, where you can explore more of the local culture and prepare for the upcoming trek.
Today’s trek will take you through dense forests and over ridges, culminating in the scenic village of Tengboche, famous for its monastery. Alternatively, you may choose to stay in Dibuche, a quieter village nearby. The trail provides fantastic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam, and the serene atmosphere of Tengboche Monastery adds a spiritual touch to your journey.
The trek from Tengboche or Dibuche to Dingboche involves a steady climb through alpine terrain. As you ascend, you’ll notice the vegetation thinning out, and the landscape gradually opens up to reveal expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Dingboche, at 4410 meters, is a beautiful village where you can rest and acclimatize further.
Today’s trek will take you from Dingboche to Chukhung, a small settlement known for its breathtaking views. This section of the trek is more challenging as you gain altitude, but it’s worth it for the stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Chukhung, situated at 5560 meters, is a strategic point for acclimatization and preparation for the high-altitude passes ahead.
Returning to Dingboche, you’ll then head towards Lobuche, passing through the Khong Ma La Pass at 5535 meters. This high-altitude pass offers spectacular panoramic views and is a significant part of the trek. The path from the pass to Lobuche involves a descent that can be physically demanding but is rewarded with stunning landscapes.
Today you’ll trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp. From Gorak Shep, you’ll embark on a hike to Everest Base Camp at 5364 meters. This iconic destination is where climbers prepare for their ascent of Everest, and reaching it is a major highlight of the trek. You’ll return to Gorak Shep for the night.
Early in the morning, you’ll hike to Kala Patthar (5550 meters), renowned for its panoramic sunrise views of Everest and the surrounding peaks. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, you’ll trek down to Dzongla, a small village at 4835 meters. The descent provides a chance to rest and prepare for the next high-altitude pass.
Today’s trek involves crossing the Cho La Pass at 5420 meters, a challenging but rewarding section of the trek. The pass offers incredible views and requires careful navigation across glaciers and rocky terrain. After descending from the pass, you’ll reach Thangnak, where you can relax and acclimatize.
From Thangnak, you’ll trek to Gokyo Lake, a beautiful high-altitude lake at 4790 meters. The trek takes you through scenic landscapes, including moraine and glacial terrain. Gokyo Lake is a serene and picturesque spot, offering stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks.
To aid in acclimatization, you’ll spend the day at Gokyo Lake and hike up to Gokyo Ri at 5360 meters. The summit of Gokyo Ri provides one of the best panoramic views of the Everest region, including a view of Everest, Lhotse, and the entire Gokyo Valley. You’ll return to Gokyo Lake for the night.
Today’s trek takes you from Gokyo Lake to Lungden or Lumde via the Renjo La Pass at 5360 meters. This high-altitude pass offers magnificent views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The trek involves a challenging ascent and descent, but the breathtaking scenery makes it worthwhile.
After crossing the Renjo La Pass, you’ll trek back to Namche Bazaar. The descent offers stunning views of the valley and is a relatively easier section compared to the previous high-altitude passes. Once in Namche, you can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and local amenities.
The final part of the journey takes you from Namche Bazaar to Lukla.. The trail retraces some of your earlier route, descending through lush forests and crossing suspension bridges. Upon reaching Lukla, you can relax and celebrate the completion of your trek.
On the final day, you’ll catch a flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla. This scenic flight offers a last chance to enjoy the stunning mountain views before returning to the bustling city life of Kathmandu, where you can reflect on your adventure and enjoy some well-deserved rest.
